Where north and south meet...
The southern part of South Tyrol has a unique landscape, surrounded by the world of Alpine mountains, with steep cliffs and snowy glaciers, while in the valleys you can feel the warmth of the Mediterranean climate. Vines and apples grow in the large gardens and lemon and cypress trees take root along the roadways. And just as the countryside is extraordinarily varied, so are the people... |
South Tyrol's capital Bozen distinguishes itself through its cultural variety. Already in the Middle ages it was an important trading centre at the most important north - South connection. Today bilingual city fascinates through its mixture of medieval-Gothic facades and splendid constructions in the style of the Italian renaissance. In the display windows, one finds traditional garbs next to Italian designer clothes. In the alleys, regional orchardists sell their fruits and wine stores offer a variety of regional and Italian wine. Buy an ice cream and enjoy all the sunny places of the city.
The South Tyrolean wine road is very known and popular. It leads from the village Terlan, known for its white wine and its asparaguses, further to Eppan and to Kaltern, where you won’t only find the exquisite Weißburgunder and Chardonnay but also the South Tyrolean Wine Museum. Here you will discover a lot of interesting details about the history and production of wine. Then, the street winds as far as after Tramin farther southward where the famous Gewürztraminer is produced. This wine annually competes with the leading wines from all around the world. Through the villages Kurtatsch, Margreid and Kurtinig, one comes as far as after Salurn, the most southern bilingual village.
This region has a lot to offer to the gourmet palate: beside the wines and the fresh fruit there are of course traditional dishes like the appetizing “Bauerngröstl” and the delicious “Knödel” (dumplings) but also delicate fish dishes....
And the autumnal “Törggelen” in the “Buschenschenken” (typical Inns), wine cellars and inns has already become a sort of duty for the visitors of the area. Sausages with sauerkraut, Speck, chestnuts as well as the new vine characterize this particular dinner. |

The visit of the south of South Tyrol is also worthwhile for the culture lover: Since this area has always been characterized by mild climate and a particular geographical position it had been colonized very often. One after the other Celts, Romans, Francs, “Bajuwaren” and Longobards lived, here; and today Germans, Italian and Ladines. All of them left their traces which can be pursued in one of the numerous small or big museums. So, the famous man of the ice, the Ötzi, one of the oldest South Tyrolean, can be seen in Bozen. In the evening you can go to watch a play at the Landestheater in Bozen. With its over 180 castles and palaces, this area has the greatest quantity of castles and palaces ever. The reason is that South Tyrol has a very particular geographical position in Central Europe and is the most important North South connection.

For the active vacationer, this region has a lot to offer: For a short hike, the fascinating Bletterbachschlucht near Radein or a tour in Ritten over Bozen; and whoever climbs the Sarntaler Hirzer is rewarded with an unforgettable panorama.
